Scholarship Contributors

 

Alcon, located in Fort Worth, Texas, has contributed to the JCAHPO Education & Research Foundation since 1992. Alcon specializes in ophthalmic drugs and solutions, surgical instruments and products, and intraocular lenses. It is committed to developing groundbreaking therapeutics, innovative instrumentation and equipment, as well as customer service, and aims to serve the best interests of eye physicians and patients in a rapidly changing environment.

 

Alimera Sciences is a privately-held ophthalmic pharmaceutical company focused on improving the delivery of therapeutic agents to enhance patient's and physician's ability to manage degenerative eye diseases, including diabetic macular edema, age-related macular degeneration, and glaucoma. Alimera Sciences has been a Partner in Learning with JCAHPO since 2005.

 

American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) is a member organization of JCAHPO. The mission of the AAO is to assure appropriate, affordable, and accessible eye care for the public by serving the educational and professional needs of ophthalmologists. AAO has been a generous contributor to the Foundation since 2002.

 

The American Association of Certified Orthoptists (AACO) is a member organization of JCAHPO. Its mission is to work closely with ophthalmologists in order to fully meet the eye care needs of patients; to promote and advance the professional and educational competence of certified orthoptists to carry out clinical diagnostic evaluations and non-surgical therapeutic management of patients with neuromuscular anomalies; to function as a non-profit foundation fostering educational and scientific endeavors for certified orthoptists; and to provide a structure for governing the activities of the membership.

 

American Glaucoma Society (AGS) is a member organization of JCAHPO. The mission of AGS is to promote excellence in the care of patients with glaucoma and preserve or enhance vision by supporting glaucoma specialists and scientists through the advancement of education and research. AGS has been a generous contributor to the Foundation since 2003.

 

The American Orthoptic Council (AOC) is a member organization of JCAHPO. Its mission is to carry out, promote, and advance the study of neuromuscular anomalies of the eyes in all their aspects, and in furtherance of these scientific and educational purposes, and to undertake programs of education, research, and study.

 

The Arthur H. Keeney, MD, Memorial Endowment Fund was established to honor the memory of Dr. Keeney, founder of the JCAHPO Education and Research Foundation. Proceeds from this endowment fund are dedicated to scholarships, and special JCAHPO projects such as education and certification programs in subspecialties.

 

The Association of Technical Personnel in Ophthalmology (ATPO) is a member organization of JCAHPO. Its mission is to represent the field of ophthalmic medical assisting; to provide continuing education for ophthalmic medical personnel; to disseminate information to ophthalmic medical personnel, and to provide channels of communication among its members.

 

The Budd Appleton, MD, Memorial Scholarship Fund, established in 1999, honors Dr. Appleton's strong and positive influence on JCAHPO as one of its founding members. He served as a commissioner (1969-80) and President (1974-75). This fund supports scholarships in his name. Dr. Appleton passed away in 1998.

 

The Charles Douglas Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 1993 to honor Mr. Charles Douglas, who was the inspiration for the development of the first ophthalmic assistant training program and a graduate of the program (Georgetown University Ophthalmic Medical Training Program in Washington, DC). Mr. Douglas passed away in 2000.

 

The Charles Talbot Campbell Charitable Foundation, located in Pittsburgh, PA, has been a generous contributor to the Foundation since 1992.

 

The Consortium of Ophthalmic Training Programs (COTP) is a member organization of JCAHPO. Its mission is to promote, through communication and cooperation, the quality and growth of training programs for ophthalmic medical personnel; encourage the development of new training program; provide a forum for communication between programs and support for training program directors; facilitate interaction between training programs and other ophthalmic professional organizations.

 

Delta Gamma Foundation contributions honor Virginia S. Boyce, a long-time member of this fraternity dedicated to sight preservation. It was established in 1951 to provide a means for collegiate and social opportunities for women to work together through charitable scientific, literary, and educational objectives. It was the first women's fraternity to endorse an international philanthropic project (Aid to Persons Who Are Blind, and Sight Preservation) and the first to incorporate its own Foundation. Delta Gamma Foundation strives to meet the needs of persons who are blind or visually impaired; encourages programs which support education and research involving sight preservation; fosters prevention and early intervention in problems affecting sight; enhances the quality of life for persons who are sight impaired; and promotes public awareness programs in areas of vision needs and concerns. Delta Gamma Foundation is located in Columbus, Ohio, and has been a major contributor to the JCAHPO Education and Research Foundation since 1995.

 

Michigan Ophthalmic Personnel Society (MOPS) is a non-profit organization established in 1987 and governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. Its membership includes all levels of OMP, orthoptists, photographers, nurses, receptionists, etc. MOPS provides continuing education to ophthalmic medical personnel to upgrade their skills, ensure the delivery of quality eye care to patients, and advance their careers.

 

The Peter Y. Evans, MD, Scholarship Fund was established to honor Dr. Evans, Charter Commissioner (1969) and Executive Vice President (1981-95). Dr. Evans is recognized for establishing the first formal educational program for ophthalmic medical personnel at Georgetown University in Washington, DC.

 

The Phil H. Weber, COMT, CRA, Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 2003. Mr. Weber was a JCAHPO Commissioner (1988-1995) and Secretary of Certification. Proceeds from the fund are used for scholarships for ATPO members in training programs and members needing continuing education. Mr. Weber passed away in March 1995.

 

The Canadian Orthoptic Society (TCOS), a member organization of JCAHPO. Patient care, education, and research form the basis of its commitment to promote excellence in and a knowledge of orthoptic services to our publics; maintain and improve standards of care with respect to orthoptic services; further and safeguard the interests of members in accordance with the principles and ethics of the profession of orthoptics; maintain the honor and integrity of orthoptics and orthoptists as health professionals; and foster a national interest in the profession of orthoptics.

 

The Virginia S. Boyce Endowment Fund was established in October 2000 to honor Mrs. Boyce on her retirement after 18 years of dedicated service to JCAHPO and its Foundation. Proceeds from the fund are designated for the Virginia Boyce Service Award to recognize the service of ophthalmic medical personnel (preferably JCAHPO-certified) who have made outstanding voluntary public service contributions in the field of eye care.

 

Virginia Society of Ophthalmic Medical Personnel. The concept of a Virginia statewide ophthalmic personnel organization was introduced in 1991. The purpose was to benefit, through education, as many ophthalmic technicians and office personnel in the state as possible. VSOMP has been a generous contributor to the JCAHPO Education and Research Foundation since 1995.

 

VISTAKON, Inc., a Johnson & Johnson Vision Care Company, has contributed generously to the JCAHPO Education and Research Foundation since 1992. Its contributions have given more than 60 students in accredited ophthalmic training programs in the U.S. and Canada the opportunity to attend a formal educational program and establish a career in ophthalmic patient care. VISTAKON manufactures Acuvue brand contact lenses, distributed worldwide.
