Q. What is the mission of the JCAHPO Education & Research Foundation?
A. The mission is: To expand and strengthen the delivery of eye care.
Q. When was the Foundation established?
A. The Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO®) established the Education and Research Foundation in 1990 to fund compelling needs in ophthalmic medical assisting, i.e., expansion of training programs through scholarships, development of certification in subspecialties, and continued research into psychometric methods of testing and simulation of tasks critical to ensure valid and reliable examinations. Q. What does the JCAHPO Education & Research Foundation do?
A. The JCAHPO Education and Research Foundation awards scholarships to students enrolled in accredited training programs for ophthalmic assistants, technicians, technologists, and orthoptists, for continuing education, certification, and financial assistance for special JCAHPO projects.

Q. How many special funds does the Foundation have?
A. Seven funds have been established to honor those people who were instrumental in certification and education of ophthalmic medical personnel: Alice Gelinas Endowment Fund; Arthur Keeney Memorial Fund; Budd Appleton Memorial Scholarship Fund; Charles Douglas Memorial Scholarship Fund; Peter Evans Scholarship Fund; Phil Weber Memorial Scholarship Fund; and Virginia Boyce Endowment Fund. These funds support scholarships and special JCAHPO projects.
Q. Who is eligible for the Virginia Boyce Service Award and how can I nominate someone?
A. The award is given to ophthalmic medical personnel (preferably JCAHPO-certified) who have made outstanding voluntary contributions in the field of eye care. For information, visit the Awards page.

Q. How much did the Foundation award in scholarships in 2007?
A. The Foundation awarded 75 scholarships totaling $44,525 in 2007 through seven different opportunities (Stein Prize, training programs, continuing education, certification, ATPO, Alimera Sciences, and Hurricane Relief).
Q. How many scholarships have been awarded since the Foundation began offering them in 1991?
A. Since 1991, the Foundation has awarded $622,465 in 673 scholarships to students in training programs; continuing education (CE) scholarships to attend JCAHPO- or ATPO-sponsored CE programs; and certification scholarships to assist with examination fees for those wishing to enter or advance in the field.

A. Alcon Foundation (1992-2007); Charles Campbell Charitable Foundation (1992-2007); Delta Gamma Foundation (1995-2007); VISTAKON (1992-2007); commissioners; ophthalmologists; ophthalmic allied health personnel; JCAHPO member organizations; OMP organizations; vendors; and staff.
Q. From whom does the Foundation request funding?
A. Ophthalmic corporations, foundations with an interest in eye care, OMP and their sponsors, ophthalmic societies, commissioners, Board members, vendors, and staff.
