Course Description

The Diabetic Eye Disease Educator Program is a self-guided online course designed to teach outreach personnel and allied health professionals about the visual system and the signs, symptoms and complications of the secondary diseases of diabetes - Diabetic Retinopathy, Cataracts and Glaucoma. The purpose of the program is that patient education messages about diabetic eye disease can be delivered through health outreach programs of community health centers, health departments, pharmacies and medical practices to patients with diabetes and populations at highest risk for developing diabetes.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe basic information on diabetes and diabetic eye disease.
  • List parts of the eye and explain how the visual system works.
  • Explain what diabetic retinopathy is and list patient education messages about the condition.
  • Explain what cataracts are and list patient education messages about cataracts.
  • Explain what glaucoma is and list patient education messages about the condition.
  • List patient education messages about general vision and eye health.

JCAHPO is proud to announce it is partnering with Prevent Blindness America to offer their Diabetic Eye Disease Educator Course through ACTIONED. The course is is designed to provide "Diabetic Eye Disease Educators" with the knowledge and materials to conduct group and one-on-one patient/client education at their facilities. This is the first collaboration between JCAHPO and Prevent Blindness America
