CDOS Certification

What is it?

Using high frequency sound waves, CDOS certificants assist the ophthalmologist in analyzing components of the eye and diagnosing patients.

The Certified Diagnostic Ophthalmic SonographerSM (CDOSSM) certification is one of JCAHPO’s specialty designation levels. CDOS certificants specialize in B-Scan sonography principles and instrumentation for eye examinations.

What does it mean for me?

The CDOS certification is recognized and respected as the standard level of certification for ophthalmic medical personnel working with B-Scan sonography. CDOS certification indicates that an individual has the qualifications and training to perform critical tasks related to B-Scan sonography in a clinical setting.

Examples of tasks that the certificant would handle

CDOSs work under the supervision and direction of an ophthalmologist to perform clinical duties. CDOSs are knowledgeable in anatomy and physiology of the eye and orbit, sonographic instrumentation, examination technique, physics, pathology, and biometry. Using high frequency sound waves, CDOS certificants assist the ophthalmologist in analyzing components of the eye and diagnosing patients.

What makes it different from COA, COT, COMT, and other JCAHPO Certifications?

CDOS is a specialty certification level separate from JCAHPO core certifications (COA, COT, and COMT). CDOSs work in a very specific division of the eye care field, while COAs and COTs participate in broader task and duties as ophthalmic medical personnel.

How do I become a CDOS?

An individual can become eligible to take the CDOS examination via the following pathways:

  • Graduate of an accredited Formal Training Program
  • Currently certified as a COA, COT, COMT, ROUB, Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonograhper (RDCS), Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS), ARRT Sonographer (R.R.(S)), or Retinal Angiographer (CRA)
  • Work experience
