Q. When and where is the annual meeting in 2008?
A. The 2008 meeting will be held November 7-11 at the Hilton Atlanta in Atlanta, GA.

Q. When does program registration start and end?
A. Online registration will open at the end of June/early July. Course bulletins are mailed in early July to all JCAHPO certificants and ATPO members. Online registration will open before the bulletin reaches your mailbox! Be sure to watch for information on the Annual Meeting Web page. Registration deadlines will be posted in May. We offer discounted rates for early-bird and pre-registrants, so register early for the best prices!
Q. When and how do we make our housing arrangements?
A. Hotel reservations must be made through the AAO Housing Bureau. The Atlanta housing list will be available to preview in May. Housing will open on June 25 to Academy members, and on July 9 to non-members (ophthalmic medical personnel). We will post a link to the housing form as soon as it is available.
Q. When will we receive our credit letters?
A. In an effort to go "green," credit letters are no longer mailed. You can access and print copies of your JCAHPO continuing education credits approximately 3-4 weeks after the annual or continuing education programs. To access your credits, login to the Online Service Center and click on "CE Activities" on the left.
Q. What does ATPO® stand for?
A. Association of Technical Personnel in Ophthalmology.
ATPO's mission is to provide, expand, and support scientific and educational opportunities for allied health personnel in ophthalmology, and to act as an advocate for its members and the profession. The association was founded as a professional association to represent ophthalmic medical personnel.
ATPO provides a forum that encourages the exchange of ideas, experiences, and the pursuit of higher levels of educational and professional growth. Individual membership, group membership (three or more technicians from one practice), and a joint membership with the Contact Lens Association of Ophthalmologists (CLAO), are offered by ATPO.

Q. What are the JCAHPO audio/video CD lectures?
A. Selected lectures from previous meetings are available on a CD-ROM that contains a handout and a quiz. To earn CE credits, simply watch or listen to a lecture on your own time, complete and submit the corresponding quiz to JCAHPO, and score 80% or higher on the quiz! Q. How much do the audio/video lectures cost?

A. An ophthalmic assistant is a person who works with an ophthalmologist (eye doctor) to provide patient care by performing many different eye-related clinical functions. A. There are many ways to earn continuing education (CE) credits. CE credits are awarded for participation in a wide range of programs and activities including lectures and workshops, independent study, and teaching approved courses. A. Once your application is accepted, you will have 90 days to take the exam. Exams are given year-round 5-6 days a week, depending on the location.

Group A/B Credits
Q. How are credits classified?
A. JCAHPO CE credits are classified as Group A or Group B. Credits can be earned from either or both groups, and the number of credits allowed from either group depends on the level of certification. Group A credit is awarded for activities focused on topics listed in the JCAHPO Criteria for Certification and Recertification handbook; Group B credit is awarded for activities focused on more advanced topics not listed in this handbook.

A. "Ophthalmic Medical Assisting: An Independent Study Course" is a textbook and exam that is published by the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) and was previously only available through AAO. Enhancements included in this revision (4th Edition) include two new chapters, Refractive Surgery Concepts & Procedures, and Understanding Practice Management; revised chapters and glossary incorporating new evidence-based information and groundbreaking technologies; and 37 procedures explained in detail. The full-color book is 368 pages, and the corresponding examination booklet contains 200 multiple-choice questions.

(JCAHPO®) have partnered to develop the Ophthalmic Coding Specialist examination. The Certificate of Completion is awarded to those who attain a passing score on this examination covering 18 aspects of ophthalmic coding. This certificate of completion is not considered a certification credential.

Performance Test - COMT
Q. How and where are the COMT Performance Tests administered?
A. The COMT Performance Test is currently a hands-on examination. Dates and locations are determined each year. In 2008 a Conditioned Performance Test will be held in Cincinnati, OH on May 3rd and a Full Performance Test will be held in Minnesota on September 20th. Beginning in 2009, the COMT Performance Test will be computer-simulated, allowing for more flexibility in testing locations and dates. Please contact the Certification Department at (800) 284-3937 for more information.
Q. How often are the COMT Performance Tests held?
A. Currently the Conditioned Performance Test is held once a year and the Full Performance Test is held once a year. The Conditioned Performance Test is for individuals who have passed at least one of the tasks, but need to retest on the other areas. The Full Performance Test is for candidates who need to complete the entire examination. Once the Performance Test moves to computer simulation, you may schedule your exam at a testing center near you. Many centers are open six days a week, year-round.
Q. What is the fee for the COMT Performance Test?
A. The application fee for a full Performance Test is $145.00. The application fee for the conditioned Performance Test is $90.00.

Q. How do I know when I am due to recertify?
A. JCAHPO sends a reminder letter and an application for recertification to you six months before your recertification date. Check the bottom right corner of your current certificate or wallet card for your recertification date or contact JCAHPO at (800) 284-3937 or jcahpo@jcahpo.org. You may also use the Online Service Center to look up your recertification date. Please be sure to notify JCAHPO of any name/address changes, or make changes in the Online Service Center.
Q. What happens if I miss my recertification deadline?
A. If you do not apply for recertification, or miss the recertification application deadline, you will be placed on non-certified status. Individuals who are placed on non-certified status are not permitted to represent themselves as JCAHPO-certified personnel; they may not utilize the credential after their name on business cards, stationery, name badges, etc. From the time you are placed on non-certified status, you will have 12 months to apply for recertification before your credential is revoked. Within that 12-month period, the number of continuing education credits required to recertify your credential does not increase, but an $85 late fee will be assessed.You may choose to take the multiple-choice exam at your previous core certification level in lieu of earning CE credits. The exam must be successfully completed within 12 months from the time you are placed on non-certified status. The Skill Evaluation or Performance Test do not need to be repeated. Please contact JCAHPO for an application and more details if you plan to pursue this method of recertification. Please note: Certificants will not receive new recertification dates when they recertify within the 12-month, non-certified status period.
Q. Do I need a sponsor's signature on my recertification application?
A. A sponsoring ophthalmologist's signature is required on recertification/certification exam applications for COA, COT, COMT, and Surgical Assisting. CCOAs must have a supervisor's signature. ROUBs may have either a sponsoring ophthalmologist's or physician's signature.
Q. How much is the recertification fee?
A. The recertification fee is $115.00 for all core levels (with or without surgical assisting). The ROUB recertification fee is $135.00.

Q. What are the Refinements?
A. The Refinements are print-based modules. Each module in the series includes a quiz and is approved for 1 JCAHPO Group A credit. Read the module and complete and submit the quiz. You need to score 80% or higher on the quiz to earn credit.

A. Allow approximately 2-3 weeks to receive notice in the mail. If you passed the quiz, you will receive a credit letter stating the number of credits you earned. If you fail the quiz, you will receive a letter and a new answer sheet to take the quiz again at no additional charge. You can login to Online Service Center to view your credits from the Refinements.

Q. What type of scholarships are available?
A. The JCAHPO Education and Research Foundation offers scholarships for:
- Students accepted in approved or accredited training programs for ophthalmic assistants, technicians, medical technologists, and orthoptists
- Continuing education (covers partial costs to attend the JCAHPO and ATPO annual meeting and scientific session)
- Certification (covers a portion of JCAHPO examination fees for those wishing to enter into or advance in the field)

Q. How do I apply for a scholarship?

Q. How and where are the COT Skill Evaluations administered?
A. JCAHPO has developed a computer-based simulation for the COT Skill Evaluation conducted at more than 250 test center locations throughout the U.S. and Canada. This computer simulation has replaced the hands-on skill evaluation.
Click here for a list of exam sites and fees or visit the Prometric website. In the "area of study," select "Academic, Professional Licensure & Certification, Corporate and Government." In the "choose testing program box," select "Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology."
Q. How often are the COT Skill Evaluations held?
A. Skill Evaluations are given year-round, 5-6 days a week, depending on the location. Contact your local Prometric center (see the link above) for hours. Once your application is accepted, you will have 90 days to take the exam.
Q. What is the fee for the COT Skill Evaluation?
A. The application fee for a full Skill Evaluation is $110.00. The application fee for the conditioned Skill Evaluation is $85.00.

Q. Are study guides for the JCAHPO exams available and how much do they cost?
A. Yes, study guides are available for the COA, COT, and COMT examinations. The guides are $15.00 for the COA and COT, and $18.00 for the COMT. Click here to view/download the order form. Online ordering is coming soon.
